Today is a great day for the City of Port Phillip as we introduce a smoke-free environment at all Council owned and operated buildings, doorways and surrounding grounds. Scientific evidence has established that there is no safe level of exposure to second-hand smoke. Only 100% smoke-free environments provide effective protection.
31 May 2014 (World No Tobacco Day) became the day when we officially removed all ashtrays from Council owned and run buildings, including town halls, libraries, community centres and the Depot. You will notice the installation of new signage, which informs staff, our visitors and community of the smoke free boundaries.
As part of this initiative, businesses with footpath trading permits have been offered the opportunity to voluntarily become smoke-free. A number of local businesses have already submitted their applications and others have made enquiries about switching to smoke free trading. These early applications are a positive sign that this policy is supported by the business community.
